According to official Italian reports, on May 23, 1966, Bruno Bolognesi, a soldier of the Customs Office, was killed by a 50-kg explosive charge while opening the Pfitscherjoch House.
However, the forensic examination carried out by the command of the Customs Agency in Bozen indicates with relative certainty that the explosion was caused by something other than 50 kg of explosives. Both the damages to the hut and the corpse of Bolognesis show clear evidence of a gas explosion.
Nevertheless, the Italian authorities blamed the “Pusterer Buibm” for the act and demanded that Austria extradite the four men from the Ahrntal.
